CUMBERLAND — Despite muddy, sloppy conditions described by one coach as the worst he’s seen at Twin Brook in 15 years, Kennebunk senior Abbey Leonardi set a course record in winning the Class A West cross country state title Saturday morning.

Leonardi covered the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 5.59 seconds, more than a minute ahead of runner-up Fiona Hendry of Cheverus.

In the Class A boys race, Scarborough senior Nick Morris won by 18 seconds in 17:03.30, with Kennebunk senior Chris Dunn second.

The Cheverus girls and Scarborough boys won team titles, with Massabesic girls and South Portland boys second.

State championships are scheduled for next Saturday at Twin Brook.
