KENNEBUNK — Abbey Leonardi has won her fourth consecutive Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year for Maine schoolgirls.

A senior at Kennebunk High who plans to continue her career at the University of Oregon in the fall, Leonardi is coming off a season in which she won her fourth straight Class A state title, finished second for the third year in a row at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional and captured fourth at the Foot Locker nationals in San Diego.

With her three track and field athlete of the year awards, Leonardi is the first Gatorade award winner in the program’s 27-year history to be honored seven times.

“Abbey is the most focused athlete I have seen through my many years in this profession,” said Kennebunk High coach Mike Dinehart in a prepared statement. “Her practice regimen is a model for any athlete who wants to succeed.”

An A student, Leonardi is a member of the KHS Captains’ Club, promoting healthy lifestyle choices among her peers and younger athletes. She has also volunteered for fundraising efforts to help displaced civilians in Sudan’s western region of Darfur.
