HALLOWELL — The Hubbard Free Library’s Annual Fund kickoff event, featuring retired journalist and author Joseph Owen, is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the 115 Second St. library.
Owen’s journalism career spans over 40 years, including 22 years as a newspaper editor and 18 years as a reporter, during which he covered significant historical events across 20 countries. He reported on the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Persian Gulf War, and the Great Hanshin Earthquake in Japan, according to a news release from Maureen Kendzierski, Hallowell Free Library Board of Trustees member.
In 2021, Owen published “This Day in Maine,” a book that grew from his daily column celebrating Maine’s bicentennial. His work highlights the diverse stories and events that shaped the state’s rich history. During the event, he will share highlights from his book and discuss the local history of Hallowell.
Each year the library raises a significant portion of its operating budget through the Annual Fund, and each year the library has an event to officially kick off that year’s fundraising.
The presentation will be followed by light refreshments.
