Gov. Janet Mills is among three women honored with this year’s Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award.
The organization cited the Mills administration’s lawsuit against the federal government over its attempt to strip millions of dollars that help support school nutrition programs. Early this month, the state settled with the Trump administration, which agreed not to interfere with Maine’s access to that money without going through the proper legal process.
The award is designed to highlight “champions of social justice” who take nonviolent approaches to defending human rights, the organization said in a written release. Winners get a cash prize, legal support and training.
“I am honored to receive this recognition named for former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, a heroic champion for civil rights and the rule of law that governs our nation and inspires the world,” Mills said in a written statement. “As a member of the generation of Americans who were inspired by the career of Robert F. Kennedy, I am truly humbled and grateful for this award, which recognizes how his remarkable legacy should inspire all of us today.”
Mills will be recognized alongside two other winners — Elizabeth Oyer, a former Department of Justice pardon attorney, and immigration reform activist Jeanette Vizguerra — at a June 5 ceremony in Washington.
“From taking a stand against unlawful executive orders and bolstering the moral strength of the Department of Justice to advocating for vulnerable immigrants, these women have chosen to stand up for their beliefs during a time when it is increasingly difficult to do so,” organization president Kerry Kennedy said in a written statement.
