SEPTEMBER

The Princess Bride: An Inconceivable Evening with Cary Elwes

Catch a screening of the iconic 1987 film “The Princess Bride,” and then enjoy a moderated discussion with one of its stars. Cary Elwes played the farm boy turned pirate turned hero Westley, and will spill the tea about some of what went on while the movie was being made. Relive the ROUS (rodents of unusual size), the Cliffs of Insanity, the moment Westley declares during an epic sword fight that he is not left-handed and when he goes tumbling down the side of a huge hill bellowing “true love.”

Maine Open Lighthouse Day

Sept. 13. Statewide. lighthousefoundation.org.

Shine a light on the second Saturday in September and take part in Maine Open Lighthouse Day. Maine has 67 lighthouses and several of them will be open to visitors around the state.  It’s a rare opportunity to climb to the top and get a close-up look at giant lenses, not to mention sensational ocean views.

Common Ground Country Fair

Sept. 19-21. Maine Organic Famers and Gardeners Association Education Center, Unity. mofga.org.

The Common Ground Country Fair has been happening since 1977. It continues to draw thousands of people every fall to Unity to partake of seeing livestock, attending educational lectures and demonstrations, hearing live music and a whole lot more.

OCTOBER

Maine Craft Weekend

Oct. 4-5. Statewide. mainecraftweekend.org.

The annual weekend includes many artists around the state who invite the public into their studio spaces. Some will offer demonstrations of their creative process, and there will be pop-up shopping opportunities. An interactive map on the event’s website will help you make a plan.

Swine & Stein Brewfest

Oct. 11. Water Street, Gardiner. swineandsteinbrewfest.com.

The annual Swine & Stein Brewfest will bring a steady flow of food, beer and live music to the heart of Gardiner’s downtown. Stand-out events include the frozen T-shirt race, beard and moustache competition and the epic Maine State Rock Paper and Scissors Championship.

Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta

Oct. 10-13. Main Street Damariscotta. mainepumpkinfest.com.

It’s a pumpkin-palooza during the whimsical event, which includes pumpkin derby races with cars crafted from pumpkins, a food court, street performers and a pumpkin pancake breakfast. Be sure to carve out time to enjoy it.

Patty Griffin + Rickie Lee Jones

Oct. 17. State Theatre, Portland, $45 – $75. statetheatreportland.com.

Singer-songwriters Patty Griffin and Rickie Lee Jones are teaming up for a co-headlining tour that includes a show in Portland. Griffin, an Old Town native, released her 12th album called “Crown of Roses” on July 25. Jones’ discography includes 15 albums. Her 1979 debut contains the hit single “Chuck E.’s In Love” and the album won her a Best New Artist Grammy.

Air Supply

Australian soft rock titans Air Supply will breeze into Portland for a night of 1980s tunes you know and secretly love. This year marks the duo’s 50th anniversary, when singers Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock first met and Air Supply came to be. Their hits include “The One That You Love,” “All Out Of Love” and “Every Woman in the World,” among others. Secure your seat now, so you don’t end up all out of luck.

Harvest on the Harbor

Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Portland. harvestontheharbor.com.

Tickets will go on sale this summer for the annual fall event, when, over three days, Maine’s culinary creativity takes center stage. The Maine Cocktail Classic, Maine Lobster Chef of the Year and  Maine Oysterfest are among three of the mouthwatering elements of the event.

NOVEMBER

Hannah Berner

Nov. 5 & 6. State Theatre, Portland, $35-$65. statetheatreportland.com.

Comic Hannah Berner brings her None of My Business tour into Portland for a two-night stint. Her comedy special “We Ride at Dawn” premiered at the number two spot on Netflix last year. Berner hosts podcasts “Giggly Squad” with Paige DeSorbo and “Berner Phone” with Des Bishop. She collaborated with DeSorbo on the book “How to Giggle: A Guide to Taking Life Less Seriously,” which debuted at No. 2 on the New York Times bestsellers list.

‘Tina: The Tina Turner Musical’

Singer Tina Turner left the physical world in 2023, but her spirit and her music live on. “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” is the perfect way to learn about the magnitude of Turner’s comeback. You’ll hear all the hits and will be reminded why Turner won a dozen Grammy Awards. She was simply the best, with hits like “Private Dancer,” “Let’s Stay Together” “Better Be Good To Me” and “River Deep Mountain High.”

Funnyman Jim Gaffigan rolls into town on his Everything is Wonderful tour with a fresh batch of material. The seven-time Grammy nominated and three-time Emmy winning comic, actor and producer is also a two-time New York Times bestselling author. He’s had numerous comedy specials, including “Comedy Monster” on Netflix.
