Maine author and historian Heather Cox Richardson has been named to TIME’s inaugural list of the most influential digital voices.
The magazine released its TIME 100 Creators list Wednesday recognizing TikTokers, podcasters and other digital entrepreneurs who are redefining how we think about and interact with online platforms.
Richardson, who lives in the Midcoast, has over 2.6 million subscribers to her “Letters from an American” newsletter on Substack, which lets writers and podcasters publish directly to their audiences and get paid through subscriptions. The newsletter focuses on current events and politics with context from American history.
She also hosts live chats and takes reader questions on Facebook.
Richardson is a professor who teaches 19th century American history at Boston College and was described in the list as “one of the most popular historians in the U.S.”

She said in a pair of Instagram posts that she is honored and grateful to have been named to the list, and also offered some advice.
Richardson, 62, said that while many of the creators on the list are younger than she is, people of all ages shouldn’t be afraid to embrace the digital age.
“Social media to me, really is just a tool to do what we have always done as human beings,” she said. “That is to create communities and to exchange information, and that’s really all that I do. So I hope that you will give it a shot.”
