WATERVILLE — An Aroostook County man was arrested Friday after leading Maine State troopers on a 50-mile chase that ended when he crashed near Exit 130 on Interstate 95.

Shortly after 2 p.m, Maine State Police received a report of a driver operating erratically at high speeds in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near mile marker 190 in the Orono area.

The driver, later identified as a 39-year-old Crystal man driving a Toyota pickup, reportedly refused to pull over at mile marker 182 in the Hampden area, Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release.

The man drove erratically in both lanes and at high speeds, posing a significant danger to other drivers, Moss said.

In a coordinated response, troopers deployed spike mats near Exit 130 in Waterville. The driver struck the mats and crashed into a tree off Main Street.

The driver was taken into custody and was taken to Thayer Hospital for evaluation. He faces charges including criminal speed, eluding a law enforcement officer, operating under the influence and failure to submit to arrest.

Main Street was briefly closed while emergency crews and law enforcement secured the scene, Moss said.
