Maine champion Bonny Eagle avenged its only loss of the Little League Softball New England regional on Thursday with a 7-1 win over Vermont champion Champlain in Bristol, Connecticut.
Bonny Eagle (4-1) advances to its second regional final in three years and will face Connecticut champion Guilford (3-0) at noon Friday. The game will be televised on ESPN.
The winner will go on to represent New England at the Little League World Series in Greenville, North Carolina, from Aug. 3-10.
“(The 4-3 loss to Vermont on an eighth-inning walk-off on) Monday was a tough one,” Maine head coach Leanne Pouliot said. “We left a lot of runners on and just talked a lot about capitalizing in those situations. Coming back and getting that game today in the fashion they did was a huge boost for the game tomorrow.”
Jasmine Peters struck out 10 batters, allowed five hits and walked three while pitching all six innings for Bonny Eagle.
Lydia Phillips stole home in the top of the second inning to give Vermont a 1-0 lead. Bonny Eagle tied it when Brylee Goriss scored on an error in the bottom of the inning.
Bonny Eagle then scored five times in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Jasmine Peters had an RBI single, and Julia Peters and Baylee Pouliot scored on wild pitches. Another run scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Goriss, and Jasmine Peters scored on an error.
Julia Peters scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Champlain stranded runners on second and third in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Vermont (1-2) finished with five hits, while Bonny Eagle had three hits and 10 walks.
The regional final will be Maine’s sixth game in as many days, but Pouliot says rest, good nutrition and hydration, and lots of support from back home have helped keep the “glitter girls” energized.
“This is wild,”Pouliot said. “I 100% believe these girls have the grit and heart to take this game tomorrow. It’s all positive thoughts for them and they are ready to roll. The World Series is their dream, and they know they can take it if they want it.”
