Christian Grenier of Waterville, the sole occupant of the Ford Fiesta, is facing multiple charges, Lewiston police Lt. Derrick St. Laurent said, including eluding an officer, operating after suspension, operating under the influence, criminal mischief, criminal speed, reckless conduct and several traffic violations.

Grenier has seven active license suspensions and an extensive criminal history in Waterville, St. Laurent said.

According to St. Laurent, officers attempted to stop Grenier’s vehicle for excessive speed at about 1:15 a.m. but he failed to pull over. A pursuit up Pleasant Street lasting about 55 seconds ended when Grenier struck M.T. Bottle Redemption at 1445 Lisbon St.

The vehicle caught fire after coming to rest inside the building and flames began spreading into the building, St. Laurent said. Officers were able to control the blaze with fire extinguishers long enough to remove Grenier from the car. Grenier was transported to Central Maine Medical Center for his injuries.

Lewiston Fire Department responded and was able to put out the flames, though the building sustained significant damage, St. Laurent said.

The building was condemned due to concerns about structural integrity.

The business posted to Facebook shortly before 5 a.m. Friday saying its Lisbon Street location would be closed due to the crash. Another location at 1360 Sabattus St. in Lewiston will continue with regular hours, the post said.

“We are working to reopen as soon as possible,” the post said. “We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you back to our Lisbon Street location soon.”
