In 2022, a midterm election year, my brother received three ballots in the mail that he did not request. I remember him saying to me that if he had been dishonest, he would have filled out and returned all three ballots.

Voter ID is a great path forward to ensure that each person gets only one vote. The new law would require that absentee ballots are sent only to voters who request them. Voter ID laws work in 36 other states. If someone cannot afford an ID, the new law ensures a free one will be provided.

The proposed law provides that a municipality may have a secure ballot drop box for absentee ballots. Maine taxpayers will no longer be required to pay postage for absentee ballot return envelopes. It’s high time “we the people” of Maine demand clean and fair elections. Vote “Yes” on Question 1 on Nov. 4.
