Two occupants were injured when a small single-engine floatplane crashed into Flagstaff Lake near Eustis on Monday afternoon, Maine State Police said.

The 1956 Cessna 170B floatplane was beginning to take off from the lake when it plunged into the water, authorities said.

“On board were the pilot, 62-year-old Stephen Vorpagel, of Readfield, and one passenger. Both individuals were rescued, brought to shore, and suffered minor injuries/abrasions in the crash,” Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in an email.

State police, the Maine Warden Service, Franklin County sheriffs, local EMS, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and the Federal Aviation Administration responded, Moss said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.

The incident comes just days after two women were killed at Flagstaff Lake when their pontoon boat flipped and threw all seven passengers into the water. The cause of that accident is also being investigated, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said.
