BOSTON — Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony is expected to miss the rest of the regular season after he was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday because of a left oblique strain.

The 21-year-old Anthony departed Tuesday’s 11-7 victory over Cleveland after striking out in the fourth inning. An MRI revealed the extent of the injury.

There is no timetable for Anthony’s return, but manager Alex Cora said players are typically sidelined for four to six weeks with this kind of oblique issue.

Entering Wednesday’s action, Boston was 2 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto but in position for a wild-card berth.

“We keep going,” Cora said of how his team will deal with the loss of Anthony. “At one point, he’s going to be part of it, so just got to be patient, keep pitching, keep putting good at-bats, keep playing.

“I told him to envision (American League Championship Series), first at-bat. Put that goal in your mind and hopefully it happens.”

Anthony missed two games last month because of mid-back tightness, but he said Tuesday night that this injury felt worse.

The Red Sox recalled infielder-outfielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester before Wednesday night’s game against the Guardians.

Anthony winced after whiffing on a 3-2 curveball for the second out in the bottom of the fourth inning. He walked off, still holding his back, and was led immediately up the tunnel to the clubhouse.

Anthony said he first felt the pain during an earlier check swing. He was replaced in right field for the top of the fifth by Nate Eaton.

Anthony had an RBI single in Boston’s four-run second inning. He is batting .292 with eight homers and 32 RBI since he was called up on June 9, and was on track to finish second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting, behind the Athletics’ Nick Kurtz.

Third baseman Alex Bregman said after Tuesday’s game that losing Anthony for any length of time would be a setback.

“It’s meaningful games in September, and all that matters is winning. So, I think the guys in here have the right mentality,” Bregman said. “Obviously, today was a bit of a gut punch for us, but everyone in here is mature enough to show up tomorrow, ready to execute and compete. Continue to do that for the rest of the month and into the postseason.”

Bregman legged out a hard chopper down the third-base line for an infield single with two outs in the eighth inning to drive in the go-ahead run, and the Red Sox beat the Guardians for their third straight victory despite a rough outing from ace Garrett Crochet, who allowed four home runs.

Jarren Duran and Trevor Story followed with RBI doubles off Cade Smith (6-6) for Boston’s second four-run inning of the game. Justin Slaten (2-4) earned the win with a perfect eighth inning.

Ceddanne Rafaela had two hits, including a two-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth after Cleveland scored six runs in the top half to take a 7-5 lead. Masataka Yoshida had three hits, including a pair of doubles, to help the Red Sox to their 10th win in 13 games.
