A Waterville man was indicted on charges he stabbed a man in the back in an Augusta apartment, causing him to bleed extensively and lose consciousness.

Police say the alleged attack happened in the early morning hours of June 28 at an apartment on Bond Street. Sy A. Perri, 35, allegedly stabbed a 44-year-old man who, according to an affidavit filed by Augusta police Detective Matthew Estes, lost four liters of blood and lost consciousness. The man was taken to MaineGeneral hospital in Augusta with a 4-inch stab wound on his back.

Hospital officials said they could not provide information on the status of the stabbing victim Monday, other than that he was not currently at the hospital.

A Kennebec County grand jury indicted Perri on elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault charges Aug. 20 at Capital Judicial Center. An indictment is not a determination of guilt; but it indicates enough evidence exists to proceed with formal charges and a trial.

An Augusta woman told police Perri and two other men were in her apartment that night. She was in bed when she heard something downstairs. She got up and found the three men yelling at each other. She subsequently pushed Perri out of the apartment and was then told by one of the men that Perri had stabbed him. The victim was bleeding all over the floor, and she called 911, according to the affidavit.

The third man who was at the apartment told police he had taken a shower and heard Perri and the apparent stabbing victim yelling at each other. He told police he was not sure what they were saying but that Perri was claiming the other man had done or was going to do something to him. He told police he saw Perri swing his hand at the other man, then heard the man say Perri stabbed him. Perri had a knife in his hand at the time, according to police.

Perri was later arrested at a Bridge Street residence, and was taken to Kennebec County jail. He was initially ordered held without bail but bail was later set at $100,000 cash. Perri, as of Monday, remained at Kennebec County jail, according to jail records.

Perri, according to Estes’ affidavit, was on probation on an aggravated assault charge at the time of the incident. Estes wrote that Perri has an extensive criminal history in Maine and North Carolina, including robbery with a dangerous weapon and kidnapping charges.

Police reviewed video footage taken by a neighbor’s camera, and stated that Perri could be seen stumbling out of the woman’s apartment at 4:28 a.m. the day of the incident, and the woman could be heard yelling at him to leave.

Both the elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault charges are Class A felonies, punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
