Both suicidal and violent impulses are far more likely to become lethal with firearms. As a psychiatrist, I know that suicidal acts are often impulsive and can be prevented when intervention is possible.
Both suicides and homicides by firearms can occur in response to crises. Often there are escalating warning signs, the “red flags” that are most commonly observed by family members.
A red flag law, also known as an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) law, allows concerned family members who observe alarming changes in behavior to apply to the court directly. In states with these laws in place, misuse of the law by family members is uncommon; judges prevent such ERPOs from proceeding.
An Extreme Risk Prevention Order would improve Maine’s current “yellow flag” law and give alarmed family members more options to help their loved ones and protect their communities.
