
An early-morning fire Monday destroyed Sweetgrass Farm Winery and Distillery in Union.
Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the 347 Carroll Road property, which included the owners’ home and barn next to the winery operation. No one was hurt in the blaze.

Union firefighters were joined by several other area fire departments, responding in mutual aid. The fire was reported around 2 a.m.
“Everyone is OK, the many town (eight town brigades) firefighters responded and worked brilliantly — saving our barn and house,” Constance Bodine, owner of the business with her husband, Keith Bodine, said in an email Monday. “However, our production facility, tasting room, and shop here in Union is completely gone.”
The owners said on the business’s Facebook page they are heartbroken but grateful their family was safe and their home spared, and thanked people for reaching out to them with kindness.
Sweetgrass has a tasting room and shop in Portland’s Old Port, which Bodine said remains open.
The business’s products include a variety of wines including wild blueberry cabernet sauvignon and apple, as well as its award-winning Back River Gin.
Authorities said the cause of the fire is under investigation. Union fire Chief Jesse Thompson could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
Monday the charred remains of what was left of the demolished building were stacked in a large, black pile on the hilltop property. Bottles and booze-making equipment were visible among the rubble.
