While I am horrified and disgusted by the murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, I feel that elevating him to an American hero and martyr is really inappropriate. No one in this country should be violently targeted for expressing their political beliefs. However, for years, Charlie Kirk has spread vile and poisonous statements contributing and promoting the deep divisions within our country.
Just because he did it with a a smile and an engaging style of proving him wrong doesn’t make those beliefs any less dangerous. It is unfortunate that he ended up being a victim of that hate.
While not wanting to inflame the current situation more, it is hard to read Kirk’s statements about race, gender, guns and elections without using the standard isms to describe this man. Yet President Donald Trump is flying flags at half-staff and is going to posthumously award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, further dividing us rather than healing us.
The president should award that medal to the people who are really standing up in this moment for healing our country. Charlie Kirk is not an American hero.
