Where: Allen E. Paulson Stadium, Statesboro, Georgia

When: 7 p.m. Saturday

Streaming: ESPN+

All-time series: Georgia Southern leads, 4-0, including three Football Championship Subdivision playoff games, in 1987, 2002 and 2011

Key stat: Maine is averaging 108 passing yards per game, last in the Coastal Athletic Association

Outlook: Maine is coming off one of the most disheartening losses in the program’s recent history, a 13-10 loss at home to Stonehill, which had never beaten a CAA opponent. Maine has faced Georgia Southern once since the Eagles jumped to FBS competition, losing 26-18 in 2019. If Maine is to have any success at all this season, it has to fix the passing game. The Black Bears passed for under 100 yards in two of their first three games. While the running attack, led by newcomer Sincere Bains, has been strong, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry, a one-dimensional offense is a big reason why Maine has lost close games each of the last two weeks. Georgia Southern, meanwhile, has allowed more than 550 yards per game, but against a much tougher schedule.

Defensively, the Black Bears already have 20 tackles for a loss, nearly a third of last season’s total of 64. Linebacker Christian Thomas leads Maine with 5.5 tackles for a loss and 33 tackles total. Quarterback JC French IV leads Georgia Southern’s offense with 528 yards passing and five touchdowns, including four to Camden Brown, who has at least one touchdown catch in each game. DJ Arnold is the Eagles’ top runner, with 215 yards and two touchdowns.

Of note: Since 2007, Georgia Southern is 34-2 at home in nonconference games. … Baines is 10th in FCS with 314 rushing yards, ninth in yards per game (103.7) and fourth in yards per carry, 7.78. … Following Saturday’s game, seven of Maine’s final eight are against CAA competition.
