I write in support of Referendum Question 2 on this November’s ballot, which asks Mainers to establish an Extreme Risk Protection Order, or “red flag” law.

When family members perceive a loved one with a firearm as a threat to themselves or others, we must take that concern as valid and enable them to work directly through the courts to have that firearm temporarily removed. It is especially important that we take this step to protect our children.

Alice Shea, a medical doctor and a mother, wrote a Maine Sunday Telegram op-ed in response to the recent shooting in Minneapolis (Sept. 7). “I believe (in) the right of an innocent child to live and attend church and school without (the fear of) being massacred. The possibility of that violence should not have to loom over their school experience.”

Dr. Shea’s words provide a strong rationale for supporting Referendum Question 2 in November.
