WATERVILLE — A Waterville man was injured late Friday when he was struck by a car while reportedly sitting in the road in the dark near Elm and Spring streets.
Mark Meserve, 55, was removed from under the vehicle after fire officials used hydraulic tools to lift the car off him, according to a Waterville Fire Department report. He was taken to Thayer Center for Health on North Street and then flown by LifeFlight to MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Police officers responded to the intersection of Elm and Spring streets just after 11 p.m. after receiving a report of a vehicle-pedestrian crash, said Maj. Jason Longley, Waterville Police Department’s commander of support services.
“At the time of the crash, it appears as though a blue Mazda operated by Thomas Hayes of Oakland was traveling south on Elm Street when it struck Mark Meserve of Waterville who was reportedly sitting in the roadway wearing dark clothing,” Longley said Monday in a news release.
“Mark was transported by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries but not life-threatening injuries. Members of the Maine State Police are also actively involved in the investigation to include crash reconstruction and forensic mapping.”
Longley said Hayes, 70, was not injured in the crash, and no charges are pending against him.
Asked why Meserve was sitting in the road in the dark, Longley responded in an email that police were not releasing further details at this time.
A voice message left at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center’s communications and marketing department Monday seeking information on Meserve’s condition was not immediately returned.
