FAYETTE – John S. True, 78, passed away on May 17, 2025, at VA Togus after a lengthy illness.

John was born on Sept. 20, 1946, in Hallowell, he is the son of the late George A. and Nettie (Gray) True. He was a resident of Fayette for many years. John attended Wayne and Winthrop Schools.

He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the United States Marines and held the rank of SGT. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Service medal with four stars and the Cross of Gallantry with palm and frame.

John was a truck driver for many years. He worked for many different local companies over the years before retiring.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret Bryant and her husband James of Wayne, Paul True and his wife Kathleen of West Gardiner, his long-time caring friend Tammy. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his mother and father, John was predeceased by his brothers George, Howard, David and Charlie True as well as his sister, Barbara Wyman.

John’s visitation will be in the Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop on Thursday, May 29, from 12 to 1 p.m. Immediately following visitation, John’s graveside service with military honors will be at the Fayette Mills Cemetery in Fayette. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
