All-time series: William and Mary leads, 9-8. The Tribe took a 28-3 win in the last meeting, in 2023.
Key stat: 118, the number of yards gained by Black Bears running back Sincere Baines on 11 carries in his Football Championship Subdivision debut last week at Liberty. Baines had a 77-yard run for his first Maine touchdown.
Outlook: For three quarters last week, Maine stayed with Liberty, a team receiving votes in the Associated Press poll, but the Flames pulled away late for a 28-7 win. Maine coach Jordan Stevens, while happy with his team’s effort, knows execution has to improve in a tough Coastal Athletic Association game at William and Mary. The ground game was as strong as it’s ever been under Stevens, with Baines and Rashawn Marshall (11 carries for 76 yards) leading the way. Baines’ breakaway speed will be tough to handle, said William and Mary coach Mike London. Maine quarterback Carter Peevy completed just 13 of 31 passes for 132 yards with an interception, and that will need to improve. Scott Woods, a transfer from Harvard, led Maine with four catches for 34 yards last week. Cape Elizabeth’s Nick Laughlin, a running back, is still out because of an injury but will be reevaluated next week and could play in Maine’s home opener against Stonehill on Sept. 13. The Tribe’s defense allowed just 237 yards to Furman, losing 23-21 when Furman scored three second half-field goals to take a close win. Linebackers Luke Banbury (14 tackles) and Harrison Johnson (13 tackles) led William and Mary’s defense.
Maine linebacker Christian Thomas is coming off a career-high game, making 15 tackles overall (10 solo) and one for a loss at Liberty. Safety Devin Vaught made nine tackles, and Stevens noted that as a unit, the defense was disciplined, missing just five tackles. William and Mary quarterback Tyler Hughes is a dual threat and is coming off a game in which he threw for 208 yards and ran for a team-high 57. The Tribe have a deep receiving group, with eight players catching a pass last week.
Of note: This is Maine’s second straight game in Virginia.
