I am writing in astonishment about a Sept. 6 post on social media by President Trump, featuring a picture as if he were Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore from the 1979 film “Apocalypse Now,” stating the following: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning … Chicago about to find out why it’s called the ‘Department of WAR’. ”
The post was accompanied by three helicopter emojis, used to symbolize the disappearance of political opponents by agents of the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.
This is yet another example of increasingly unhinged behavior by the president. The Republican party is supporting this madness. We the people, all Republicans and other members of Congress need to come together to call out President Trump for what he is: a dangerous, power-hungry individual who will do and say anything to mask his failures. If we don’t, we will go down in history as enablers who allowed this administration to lose America’s credibility.
This online posting is a perfect example of why I am sickened by the times we are in.
