The Boston Red Sox traded left-handed starter Wade Miley and right-handed reliever Jonathan Aro to the Seattle Mariners for right-handed reliever Carson Smith and left-handed starter Roenis Elias, according to several media reports out of Nashville, Tennessee, where the annual baseball meetings began Monday.

Miley, 26, became expendable when the Red Sox signed free-agent lefty David Price last week. Dave Dombrowski, the team’s new president, was able to trade Miley for one of the majors’ most promising relievers.

Smith, 26, is coming off an impressive rookie season, with a 2.31 ERA and 13 saves in 70 appearances. With a fastball that averages around 93 mph, Smith struck out 92 and walked 22 in 70 innings. He had a 1.01 WHIP (walks/hits per inning).

Elias, 27, has been a starter for the Mariners the last two seasons, going 15-20, with a 3.97 ERA in 51 games (49 starts).

Miley pitched one season for Boston, leading the team in wins (11-11) and innings pitched (1932/3). He recorded a 4.46 ERA.

Aro, 25, began last season in Portland and reached the majors for six games (6.97 ERA).
