Regulators to study Maine’s lobsters with goal of protecting them

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission wants to protect the kind of collapse that has happened in southern New England.

New regulations will be phased in by June 2019.

As many as 10 percent of lobsters die on their way to market, many because of rough handling, Jean Lavallee is telling fishermen in Maine this week.

The federal agency says it is working to keep exports of live North American lobsters flowing to the European Union.

Although many want to end the long waits and limited access to the profitable industry, the latest proposal won’t do it, critics tell legislators.
